Klarna acquires Sofort

In 2014, Sofort completed a merger with Klarna in a deal worth $150 million. Klarna is a Swedish fintech company that handles most of the country’s e-commerce transactions. When the two companies merged, they created The Klarna Group, though they continued to operate independently from each other and still do to this day.

Until the merger, Sofort’s full name was Sofort Überweisung. When the merger was complete, its name was officially shortened to just Sofort. It was also adapted for various international markets: for German-speaking countries, it remained as Sofort; for France, it was changed to Payez Ici (‘Pay here’); and for the UK, Pay Now. Sofort operated as a public limited company at first, then once it joined Klarna it became a limited liability company.

Expansion to European countries

The merger with Klarna also enabled Sofort to begin its European expansion. As of mid-2022, it can be used in a total of 13 countries:

  • Austria

  • Belgium

  • Finland

  • France

  • Germany

  • Italy

  • Norway

  • Poland

  • Spain

  • Switzerland

  • Sweden

  • The Netherlands

  • The United Kingdom

There are over 120 employees working across three main offices in Germany (Munich, Cologne and Giessen) and several sales offices in Spain, Poland and Belgium.

The key to Sofort’s success has been its convenience. When using this payment method for online transactions, users don’t have to enter bank details; they don’t even need to create an account.
